Rules for developing your online course:

- Provide as Much Detail in Your Syllabus as Possible.

In traditional classrooms, most teachers spend the first day of class going through the syllabus; however, online courses are more streamlined and don’t have the time. As such, your syllabus should answer as many questions preemptively as to avoid this slowdown.

- Build a Sense of Community

Despite the way it might seem, online education should always be a fundamentally communal activity to promote discussion. For the conversation to flow freely, there needs to be a sense of community already in place through group exercises. Some teachers recommend spending the first two weeks on community building to have it pay off with better lesson retention down the line.

- Keep Online in Mind

For pre-existing teachers, it can be very tempting to transcribe their traditional face-to-face lectures into online text. Since the online environment is based on visual mediums like videos, interaction, and exploration, it is vital to design your classes with this in mind.

- Plan for Different Systems

Web pages operate differently depending on what web browser and device they are using on. Check with your instructional designers to confirm that your course will work correctly on different options. It’s recommended to check with them ahead of time to provide a template that will work.

- Use Existing Information

Often teachers believe that they must develop every lesson from the ground up, however, there are often existing resources available online. The benefit of working online is that you have the ability to curate content in addition to creating it.

- Be Consistent with Formatting

Maintaining consistency is important with face-to-face teaching, and even more so with online classes. Wherever possible, create a template of what you will want to get from your students in each module and follow that pattern. Changing the format halfway through the process will inevitably lead to students missing assignments or content.

- Keep Within Workload Parameters

Some educators tend to add additional work in an online format to make up for the lack of face-to-face interaction. It is better to define a workload range and stay within it to prevent cramming too much content into one class. Better for students to learn within a specific range and then give them options for additional research.

- Provide Alternate Formats When Possible

To assist with different learning styles and personal preferences, it is worthwhile to make sure that there are other ways to consume the same lesson. For example, providing a transcript to accompany a video.

- Mix Content and Activities

This is not unique to the online education space, but it is a beneficial idea to keep in mind. People learn better when they can engage with the content in proper intervals to commit the knowledge to memory. In the online classroom, programs like Articulate Storyline or VoiceThread can help enable retention.

- It Takes Time

Online content takes time to develop correctly. It is highly recommended to start working on your lesson plan and syllabus as quickly as possible to give time to troubleshoot and refine it.
